Speaker: Mr. Mike Carnell

Topic: The Future of Continuous Improvement

This presentation will discuss the modern history of Quality and productivity as a reference point for what we are now calling Continuous Improvement (CI). CI gained momentum through the 1980’s. It culminated with Six Sigma bursting onto the scene as an international phenomenon. Six Sigma morphed into Lean Six Sigma over the last three decades and is still at the forefront of the Continuous Improvement movement. The question currently being asked is “Is Six Sigma Dead?’ Not only is it not dead, but it has become a social convention. Driven by a global economy, Continuous Improvement has become an essential factor in business survival in the foreseeable future.

Mike Carnell is an internationally recognized and widely publicized thought leader, educator and consultant in the areas of continuous sustainable improvement.   He began his career in the continuous improvement disciplines in the early 1980's while employed at Motorola. It was there that Mike began his collaboration with a team of professionals at the Government Electronics Division to develop the methodology today commonly known as Six Sigma or DMAIC.  His twelve years of process improvement success at Motorola secured his selection as one of the lead architects of Allied Signal’s and General Electric’s Six Sigma deployments, now considered global benchmarks for continuous improvement initiatives worldwide.  This makes him one of the most experienced Six Sigma and business improvement practitioners in the industry today.

As a seasoned trainer and coach in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, Mike Carnell has developed and taught executive programs in leadership and organizational development at leading companies around the globe.  He has also directed award winning deployments aimed at delivering tangible results for his customers.  His deployments at Lonmin Platinum South Africa was twice awarded in 2006 and 2007 by WCBF as the “Best Achievement of Six Sigma In Manufacturing” for completing 125 projects and saving $78 million in two years, and in 2009, his deployment at EMCON Technologies was awarded the “Best New Deployment of the Year” at the iSixSigma Live conference in Miami for achieving $30.7M in benefits in their first year.  With high profile Six Sigma deployments such as Motorola, Allied Signal and General Electric as a foundation, these three awards received in the span of five years are evidence of the success Mike Carnell and his team of consultants have achieved by effectively integrating a business excellence strategy into a company, regardless of size or challenge.

As an accomplished speaker and published author, Mike is considered a subject matter expert in the fields of business excellence and sustainable improvement.  Mike’s first book, “Leaning into Six Sigma,” written in novel format, covers the subject of integrating Lean Enterprise and Six Sigma.  It was released internationally in June of 2001 by McGraw-Hill and is available in bookstores.  Mike has published articles in Six Sigma Forum Magazine and iSixSigma Magazine; written the 3.4 PARTS PER MILLION column, for ASQ’s Quality Progress magazine for thirteen consecutive years; and published nine articles on www.iSixSigma.com.  With over 5800 posts, Mike was the winner of the Most Helpful Poster at the 2010 iSixSigma Live! Summit and Awards ceremony. He is also a featured speaker on the Quality Conversations program for www.blogtalkradio.com.

Mike Carnell is an entrepreneur, currently engaged as the owner and in management of several different companies.  He is the founder and president of three full-service Six Sigma and Lean Enterprise firms CS International, Six Sigma International and Six Sigma Applications, and he owns a manufacturing firm, Tejas Plastics Inc., in San Antonio, Texas

Mike holds a BS from Arizona State University, Member of the ASU Alumni Association, and a lifetime member of the National Honor Society. He has been listed in the National Register's Who's Who in Executives and Professionals and in the International Who's Who of Professional's.
