Presentation: Closing the Gap – How to Obtain Leadership Commitment and Sustain the Gains.

Key Factors to Sustaining Continuous Improvement Initiatives

Long-term sustainability can seem like the legendary ‘unicorn’ of improvement initiatives. Without robust support from leadership and a commitment to the change initiative; sustainability will certainly become a myth much like the unicorn. Leadership commitment to change is a known key factor in any strategic endeavor whether it be Continuous Improvement, HSE, or Quality. However, are the steps to obtaining leadership engagement fully understood?

Understanding how to connect with the stakeholders and leadership in any strategic improvement endeavor is vital to sustainability and the health of the overall project. In fact, leadership support is vital to obtaining traction to get a change initiative off the ground at all. Interestingly: leadership may not entirely grasp exactly what is required of them to ensure that the precious time and energy of their change agents are not wasted. ‘Engagement’ and ‘Support’ have different levels of meaning based on individual perspective. Oftentimes leaders do feel that they are engaged, even though the change agents may see it otherwise. How do you close the gap to get your leadership on board?

With years of developing grass-roots continuous improvement initiatives in several industries and organizations of all sizes; I will share with you what I have found works and doesn’t work when it comes to laying the foundation for improvement initiatives and connecting with leadership. Obtaining leadership commitment and the support we need can feel like a goal that is beyond our reach. Fortunately, this goal is not as unattainable as it may seem. Join me for a discussion of these topics followed by an open Q&A session. I look forward to adding value to your improvement endeavors!
