The 53nd Science Engineering Fair of Houston

It is that time again to join us at the 53nd Science Engineering Fair of Houston. ASQ Section 1405 is asking our membership to volunteer as judges at the 53^ndScience Engineering Fair of Houston. Come and join the fun on Friday, March 2, 2011 at the George R. Brown Convention Center at 6:00 p.m.

The Science Engineering Fair of Houston, SEFH serves as the regional fair for all public, private, charter and home school junior and senior high school students in Harris County and 23 surrounding counties throughout Southeast Texas. The 2012 SEFH projects are scheduled for judging and display on March 2 at the George R. Brown Convention Center – Hall A. Individual projects will be entered in either the

Junior/Middle School (grades 7&8) Division, Ninth Grade Division, or Senior Division (grades 10-12).

Each year, ASQ has actively participated in the special awards program in partnership with professional societies, businesses, industrial and technical organizations in an effort to acknowledge qualified high school students who can demonstrate through their projects an understanding of how to utilize mathematics and science in the utilization of new technology.

We would like you to join us as a volunteer judging the many projects which are displayed by the talented students. Directions to the George R. Brown Convention center and orientation guidelines for judging the SEFH on March 2 are reference for your review.

The chapter would like to thank you in advance for your generous contribution as a judge in helping ASQ Section 1405 participate in supporting the advancement of student’s knowledge and hands-on experience in the advancement of engineering, science, mathematics and technology. Dear Section Member:

Your Leadership Team is planning many activities for the months ahead, so please check the calendar often at the www.asqhouston.orgwebsite for updates. Besides the dinner meetings and one or two plant tours that we are working on, there are a couple of community outreach events that we are scheduling in the months ahead. We would like for you to consider joining us as a volunteer to help us judge the many projects which are displayed by the talented junior high and high school students in the Greater Houston area. This yearly community outreach event will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center on the evening of March 2^nd, 2012. Please contact Valerie Rosemond or Robert Woodum if you would like to participate in this fun and worthwhile event. Our website will also have additional information and necessary details as we get closer to March 2^nd.

The Nominations Committee is putting together the list of nominees for our next program year’s Leadership Team. If would like to run for officer of the section, or if you would like to nominate someone, please contact either Bhavesh Joshi or Anthony Adams during the month of February.

Our next Professional Development meeting is scheduled for February 16^th at the United Way building at 50 Waugh Drive. Our dinner speaker will be Dr. Kirstin Craft, who will be discussing how Quality concepts are being applied in issues related to those who will be the workforce of the next generation. She should have some very interesting insights that are applicable in today’s workplace as well, regardless of the industry.

The University of Houston is conducting a study to investigate the effect of continuous improvement practices on organizational performance. As a member of the Houston Section of ASQ, we encourage you to participate in this important project. If you participate, you may choose to be entered into a drawing for one of three prizes at the end of the survey.

I love the start of a new year. Just the idea of it conjures up so many images of new possibilities and wonderful beginnings! I trust you have a good start on your new year!

We have several activities coming up soon. To begin with, the members of the ASQ Greater Houston are encouraged to volunteer to participate in this coming weekend’s Houston Marathon. There’s something for everyone! Your Greater Houston Section has set a goal to participate in at least 4 community outreach events during this program year. Besides the “Toys for Tots” drive in December and the Science & Engineering Fair in March, we are encouraging our members to participate as a team in this worthwhile event this Saturday and/or Sunday, January 14^thand 15^th. You can bring your friends and family and have a good time with other ASQ members, as well as maybe even get a little bit of exercise to go along with your New Year’s resolutions! If interested, please contact Robert at rwoodum@fiskmei.com, or call 281-913-1702 to get more information. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun, and you’d have a win-win-win situation by helping ASQ reach its goals, help others in this charity event, and help yourself by getting some exercise, and meeting new friends! I plan to be there one or both days.

Deadlines for registration to take the ASQ Certification exams proctored in Houston on March 3^rd are fast coming upon us. The deadlinefor applying to take the exams in March is January 13^th, although you can register as late as January 18^thfor an extra $50.00. The Houston Section has just started up a refresher course for the CRE exam, so if you are interested in the Reliability Engineer Certification, you can still join in for the next 7 class sessions! You can get more information by contacting our Education Chair, Education@asqhouston.org.

For those interested in Food Safety management Systems, on Tuesday, January 10^th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. (EST), there’s a free webinar being put on by The ASQ Columbus Section 801 in cooperation with Omnex. The title of this “live” webinar is “Why Food Safety Management Systems, Quality Improvement and Environmental Management Best Practices are Critical for Survival”. And finally, our Professional Development meeting on January 19^th features Dr. Latha Ramchan, Dean at the C. T. ASQ Houston Section 1405 has a volunteer team working with the Houston Marathon sponsors for the benefit of charity programs that link thousands of runners with participating nonprofit organizations. This event provides a platform for charities to raise awareness and funds as well as educate others about their initiatives. ASQ Houston wants you to volunteer for this worthy event. Every Quarter, The Greater Houston Section 1405 offers refresher courses on certification exams offered by the ASQ exams administered by the local section. The classes are normally held on consecutive Saturdays at UH Houston campus from 8AM to noon or 1PM based on the class schedule.

Our chapter is currently looking for instructors who can teach one or more of the following courses either in full or in part (upto 2 instructors can split the course responsibilities).

On the same note, if you are interested in taking any of these exams and would like to take one of our refresher classes do contact us. Applicants benefit from gaining valuable tips from experienced ASQ faculty and learn from valuable discussions with fellow members in the class while reviewing the questions covered in the Council of Indiana exam materials.

The ASQ Healthcare Division is announcing the 2012 HCD Nightingale Scholarship!

This is a great opportunity for a student to gain some recognition for work related to healthcare quality! ASQ’s Healthcare Division will award one annual $2,000 scholarship in honor of Florence Nightingale, the widely recognized initiator of nursing as a profession. The scholarship winner will be announced at the Quality Institute for HealthcareConference May 21-23, 2012 in Anaheim, CA.

If you are currently a student in an accredited post-secondary institution pursuing studies related to healthcare quality, you may wish to apply for this scholarship. Dear Section Members:

The 2011 Holiday season is already here with all the hustle and bustle it brings with it! It’s hard to believe we are approaching the final weeks of 2011. Where did the year go?

We had another very successful dinner meeting in November, this time sponsored by ASQ in conjunction with the Houston chapter of APICS, where we were reminded once again that the timeless Quality Principles first shared by Dr. Deming many years ago still hold true today, as Mike Micklewright so skillfully conveyed in his entertaining presentation. For those of you who are interested, we have posted on our website the presentation that Mike shared with the 200+ dinner meeting attendees on Thursday, November 17^th.

To all those of you who have studied so hard in preparation of the Certification Exams this coming Saturday, December 3^rd, good luck and best wishes for your success in obtaining your certification! For those interested in refresher courses for the March 2012 certification exams, the Education Committee will be posting the details soon on our website, so please be sure to check for that information.

We are still looking for volunteers to serve your Section in the committees of Membership, Programs, Arrangements, Education, Communications, and Community Outreach. You’ll get so much more from your membership by participating on one or more of these committees, not to mention the great friendships and sense of satisfaction of giving of your time to your local Section! Our last meeting of 2011 will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Saturday, December 10^th, and promises to be an evening of learning, reaching out to the community, and having lots of fun. As in previous years, we will be meeting with ASQ Section 1422, and together sponsor the “Toys for Tots” drive as one of our community outreach initiatives for this program year. ASQ Greater Houston Section 1405 - November Seminar and Dinner Meeting

Dear Members:

The ASQ Greater Houston Section 1405 in partnership with APICS is bringing to Houston world-renown Mike Micklewright, a dynamic speaker, actor, motivator, trainer, author, and Dr. Deming impersonator who will be presenting a half day Seminar titled “Creating a Leaner Quality Management System”. During the session, participants will be exposed to some forward-thinking ideas about reducing QMS documentation by as much as 50-80% while still maintaining all important content! Can you envision a two-page Quality Manual?

Following the seminar, members from both ASQ an APICS will have an opportunity to network before the Dinner meeting at 6:30 PM. Mike will again speak at after dinner on the subject “Out of Another @#%^! Crisis …” Mike will explain the value of Deming’s 14 points and will challenge us on the way we manage and our current thinking about management and leadership techniques.

Mike is VP of Global Continuous Improvement and Supplier Development for HydraForce, Inc., and is based out of Chicago, Illinois, and is highly qualified to speak on the subject.

Dear Section Members:

We’re finally having a welcome change in the weather, and maybe it’s here to stay for awhile. These beautiful blue skies and cool fresh mornings are sure a treat as we swing into the last few weeks of the year.

We had a great session in the first part of October with Maxine Shapiro. They say dynamite comes in small packages, and Maxine is proof of that! We had a great combined session with PMI at the Hess Club; those who were unable to attend sure missed out on a great interactive session about thinking “inside the box”! She had us laughing, sharing information with old and new friends, and under her guidance the audience easily provided impromptu examples of creativity and innovation using what we already have to get great results. The session was well-received by both groups of professionals.

ASQ Certification exams in the Houston area will be held on December 3, 2011 at the University of Houston at the School of Technology Annex Bldg 503 and the exam rooms are 120 – G, H, and K. We have several members signed up to take one of the various certification exams.

Our November dinner meeting will again be held at the Hess Club, and is scheduled for Thursday the 17^th. You will not want to miss this event. Our Section 1405 is working jointly with APICS to bring Mike Micklewright to Houston, and he will be our Dinner Speaker with the topic “Out of Another @#%^! Crisis …” . I understand he does a good job at impersonating Dr. Deming, and can really get Deming’s 14 points across in a lively and entertaining way. Recertification Data Analysis

This year one of our section goals is to capture the percentage of certification renewals. We are looking for volunteers to help gather and then analyze the data on renewals of 1405 members. Data gathering can be by email, phone call, when exams are given, etc. This activity is estimated to be one to three hours a month. Dear Section Members: I trust that you are all doing well in your personal as well as your business lives, and that you are enjoying this wonderful fall weather! We are in the process of setting up the refresher courses this month for the certification exams in December. If you have a particular refresher course you would like to attend, please check the asqhouston.org webpage or contact our new Education Chair, Vijai Venkata at www.education@asqhouston.org. We are always looking for volunteers, so if you are interested in volunteering for helping out with your ASQ Section, please let me know! We have opportunities on all committees, especially the membership committee and the education committee. Your section is what you make it to be, and we welcome the opportunity to work with new volunteers to help our section grow in its ability to be an asset to its members. We had a great turn-out for our September professional development dinner meeting. Our next meeting will be next Tuesday, October 11th at the Hess Club. We are sponsoring this event in conjunction with PMI, and look forward to Maxine Shapiro’s presentation titled “Why think outside, when everything you need is INSIDE THE BOX”. It promises to be an interesting evening with great networking opportunities, great food and some food for thought as well! We’re also planning on having a couple of interesting tutorials from 5:30 – 6:30: a Quality Audit Forum – Discussion Forum, and a session titled “Guide to improving Healthcare work processes using PDSA cycle with DMAIC tools”.
