Our topic for this month is Information Security using ISO 27000. Attendees will be given insight on how organizations should use ISO 27000 to establish best practices on information security management, risks and controls within the context of an overall information security management system.

Our featured speaker will be Mr. Subrata Guha of UL - DQS Inc.

Over 25 years of professional experience in the fields of IT Service Management, Software Engineering, Audit / Assessment of Quality Management Systems, and Research and Development on Quality Models.

He is head of IT Certification practice of UL DQS. He is also a Lead Auditor of ISO 9001, ISO 20000 and ISO 27001. He has vast auditing/assessment experience. He is an SEI authorized instructor of CMMI 1.2. He is also Carnegie Mellon University authorized Lead Evaluator, instructor and consultant for the eSCM-SP model.

He has worked as a visiting industrial scholar at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. His area of research work was to compare various models and standards applicable to IT and IT enabled sourcing. He has published number of Technical Reports from Carnegie Mellon University.

In his previous career in a major IT Services company, he has led multiple

consulting projects in USA, Japan and South Korea.

He holds a Masters degree in Electronics & Radio Physics and a Post Graduate

Diploma in Computer Applications.

Jami is a professor in Organizational Leadership and Supervision Program and the Project Management Program at the University of Houston. Additionally, she is the Director of the UH-Six Sigma Program. Jami received her B.S. in Textile Engineering from North Carolina State University and received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University. Her industrial experience includes several years as a product and process improvement engineer in the U.S. textile industry, and she is certified in Six Sigma Black Belt training.

Our featured speaker will be Mr. Jerry Skaggs, of UL-DQS, Inc.

Jerry has 29 years of experience in the fields of Environmental Management, Auditing and Project Management. He has extensive experience in ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, LEED, and ISO 5001 Energy Management Standard to name a few.

He is the Environmental Programs Manager for UL-DQS, Inc. He is an accredited Lead Auditor for both ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. He is also a Professional Engineer.

He holds a M.S. in Public Health from Tulane University and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Kentucky.

Dear Section Member:

I trust you are all enjoying the last few days of spring before we begin the hot and humid summer weather of Houston Texas. Having moved to Houston from beautiful southern California more than 20 years ago, it took me several years to get used to this area’s summer heat and humidity, but I’ve sort of “acclimated”, so that I can now truthfully say that I love living in Houston (as long as there’s a good air conditioner around)!

Here’s a quick reminder for those interested in ASQ certification: the deadline for registering for the exams to be held in Houston on June 2^nd is just around the corner on April 13^th. ASQ certification is a formal recognition by ASQ that an individual has demonstrated a proficiency within, and comprehension of, a specific body of knowledge. According the information on www.asq.org, nearly 150,000 certifications have been issued to dedicated professionals worldwide. Many professionals find that certification gives them a decided advantage over their competition and increases their potential for a higher salary and greater opportunities in the workforce. You can review the different types of certification and sign up for the exam for the certification of interest by going to http://prdweb.asq.org/certification/control/certifications.

Our final community outreach activity for this program year is the Avon Walk at Stude Park. If you can make some time in your schedule, I would encourage you to consider volunteering through our Section for this worthwhile event by going to (http://www.asqhouston.org/en/cev/70).

The World Conference on Quality and Improvement is now a little more than a month away, and will be held in Anaheim, California on May 21-23, 2012. If you’re interested, please see www.asq.orgfor more information and registration. This yearly event is always an incredible opportunity for learning and networking.

Closer to home though, we are always looking for more volunteers to participate in helping us make our Section activities successful. Getting involved in your local section is one of the most rewarding aspects of American Society for Quality membership. ASQ Section 1405 functions solely on the volunteer time of its professional members. Whether it is 1 hour or 1 day, an opportunity exists for your volunteer time. Among the benefits to be enjoyed by actively volunteering, are the developing of new personal friendships, and obtaining opportunities for personal growth and development. Fellow Member:

In accordance with the Section Operating Agreement between Section 1405 and the American Society for Quality (ASQ), the section has formed a nomination committee and is seeking nominations for the Section Leadership Positions of Chair, Chair-Elect and QMP Chair, Section Secretary, and Section Treasurer. We have in the past always elected the Chair position from the Chair-Elect position. This gives the person a chance to work closely with the Section Chair and lends continuity to the office. Because we do not have a Chair-elect this year, we will be nominating for all four offices. The treasurer and the section chair can serve a maximum or two terms.

We have nominees for the Section Chair, Chair-elect, and Secretary. We are still searching for a volunteer to act as treasurer for the program year. If you can devote 5-10 hours a month to the section we need you.

Requests to run for one of these offices are generally submitted to the nomination committee. The committee determines the candidate’s qualification for the office and places the name on a ballet. It is possible to nominate to any of the elected offices without going through the Nominating Committee. This can be done by submitting a Nomination Petition before the Start of the March Membership meeting. The petition must be signed by at least 10 Active Members of Section 1405 who endorse the nomination. A petition form is available through the nominations committee for this purpose.

You can submit your name some else’s for consideration by the nominating committee for any of the offices described above the name and contact information and a brief biography to Bhavesh Joshi (bhavesh.joshi@gmail.com) or Tony Adams (adams2all.aa@gmail.com). Or you can mail the information to:

The purpose of the Voice of the Customer committee is to promote member unit and society research opportunities, participate in questionnaire development and conduct analysis which will provide useful and applicable information to the Section and the Society.

Our objectives to achieve our purpose include:

Reviewing ASQ Section Member Satisfaction Surveys
Reviewing ASQ's Voice of the Customer Summary Reports
Aligning VOC activities with the ASQ HQ's President's Race to Retain.
Working with Section SLT to set goals/metrics to support the business plan as it relates to VOC data collection and analysis.
Working with SLT to collect and utilize VOC data to recommend appropriate programs and services.
Working with the Communications Committee in an effort to ensure all members are contacted using their preferred method, if possible.

Our goals include:

Conducting member surveys at each Professional Development meeting, asking specific, targeted questions for "honest" responses.
Conducting annual membership survey using ASQ HQ's Qualtrics
Developing incentive plan for members who respond to surveys
Making recommendations [from survey results] for and working with the respective SLT Chairs
Reviewing the current monthly communication efforts to ensure all members are being reached.

These goals and objectives should provide the Section wtih a baseline to ensure the successful hand-off to the next VOC Chair's for the 2011 year.

Upcoming Community Outreach Events

As part of our expanded Community Outreach Program, Local Section 1405 is proud to offer its membership the opportunity to participate in Rock The Cure, 2010 Walk to Cure Diabetes. The ASQ team is planning to participate in this worthwhile event on Saturday, November 6 at Reliant Park to build diabetes awareness, raise money to fund research, and help find a cure for diabetes and its many serious complications. Check-in begins at 7:30 AM and the 5K walk itself commences at 9 AM. Last year's walk raised over $1.6 million for this cause. Even if participating in the walk is not feasible, there are many other volunteer opportunities available such as greeting participants, passing out T-shirts, handing out food and water to the walkers, taking monetary donations, and just have a great Saturday with other ASQ Section 1405 members in supporting a worthwhile cause.
