Dinner Presentation: Quality in Projects & Non-routine Processes
Dr. Jamison V. Kovach is an Associate Professor at the University of Houston. She received her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University. She is certified in Six Sigma Black Belt training, and she serves as the Director of the University of Houston-College of Technology’s Lean Six Sigma program. UH-Six Sigma Program.
Abstract: Effectively managing projects requires balancing competing constraints. While some aspects of project management are well established, managing quality within projects is one area that has not been widely explored. Methods for improving the quality of products/services in mass production environments (i.e., repetitive/routine operations with a moderate to high degree of certainty), such as Total Quality Management, Lean, and Six Sigma, are well known. It is often challenging, however, for project managers to apply traditional quality improvement methods that focus on control and standardization because projects are unique endeavors often wrought with uncertainty and conflicting objectives. Hence, the processes described in the Project Management Body of Knowledge regarding project quality management, which draw upon traditional quality improvement methods, may be inappropriate and/or detrimental to project performance. Prior research supports the significant disparity between existing concepts of quality management and the challenges faced in project-based environments. However, there is limited research available regarding the development of an effective framework for project quality management. This presentation will discuss the issues surrounding this problem and suggest some ideas regarding quality management that may help to address and the situational uncertainty faced in project-based environments. Given the dynamic nature of projects, where the path from start to finish is often ambiguous, an increasingly important part of project management has become learning and knowledge management. Given this fact, this presentation will approach ideas for improving the management of quality within projects from a learning and knowledge-based perspective. Attendees will be sure to gain tools that they can take back to their organization. You don't want to miss this event.

She is certified in Six Sigma Black Belt training, and she serves as the Director of the University of Houston-College of Technology’s Lean Six Sigma program. Her industrial experience includes more than five years as a product and process improvement engineer in the U.S. textile industry, where she was mainly responsible for the shade quality of dyed fabrics. Her research interests include robust/experimental design and the application of quality improvement methods for organizational problem solving. She is a senior member of ASQ, and she regularly presents her research at ASQ, DSI, IIE, PMI, and POMS annual conferences. Her research has recently been published in Quality Engineering, Quality Progress, and Quality Approaches in Higher Education and she has a forthcoming article in the Journal for Quality and Participation’s October 2012 issue that explores reasons for quality initiatives’ success or failure. In addition, Dr. Kovach was the 2010 ASQ Feigenbaum Medalist, an award presented to young quality professionals who have made a significant contribution to the quality field, she was inducted into the International Academy for Quality in 2011, and she was named as one of the “40 New Voices of Quality” by Quality Progress in 2011.Dr. Jamison V. Tutorial: "Confronting the Challenges of Medication Error Reduction"
Abstract: No clinician wants to accept the occurrence of medical errors as inevitable. A team of nurses and pharmacists aimed to reduce medication administration errors in their Pediatrics unit by using Lean and Six Sigma to:
· Examine the process flow to understand where errors could occur
· Identify potential causes of errors via Ishakawa diagrams
· Analyze survey results of staff and patients pre- and post-intervention
· Introduce visual cues for improved communication among all staff
Bio: Valentine Boving is a Sr. Quality Engineer at U.T.MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) in Houston, TX where she facilitates teams to improve patient flow and safety throughout the institution. Prior to healthcare Ms. Boving was in charge of process improvement for a major Houston biotech manufacturer. She holds Masters degrees in Manufacturing Engineering from University of Houston and in Cellular Genetics from University of Texas. Ms. Boving is a Senior member of ASQ, the Section 1405 Secretary, and ASQ CQE and CSSBB. She is also active in the IIE Lean Division.
During her 11 years in quality, Ms. Boving has applied quality tools to diverse industries and the community by designing production floor layouts, streamlining purchasing departments for significant savings, and improving traffic intersection repair times (for which she received a Letter of Commendation from Houston’s Mayor). In healthcare, Ms. Boving has worked closely with the Pharmacy, ICU, Pediatrics, and Facilities, and most recently, Radiation Oncology. In addition, she has led projects to reduce medication errors, to implement electronic orders systems, and to design standardized barcoded armbanding processes throughout MDACC.
