Our featured speaker will be Dr. Kristin Craft, Principal at Stehlik Intermediate School in Aldine Independent School District (AISD).  AISD is the 12th largest district in the state of Texas and 70th in the nation with 72 schools serving approximately 61,000 students in the Houston area. The student population is 65.3 percent Hispanic and 29.5 percent African American. More than 84 percent of students come from economically disadvantaged homes.
 
In October of 2009, ASQ published a case study on how the district embarked upon a 3 year review cycle to measure 77 indicators of approach, deployment, integration and learning to capture hundreds of best practices.  Read case study. AISD has received state and national recognition for performance improvement.  Dr. Craft will further explain how Stehlik Intermediate School puts Quality In Action on a daily basis in educating the leaders of tomorrow.  This is sure to be an educational event, which will demonstrate that quality principles go across all industries. Members are sure to pick up strategies that can be utilized within their organizations to identify, implement and continually improve best practices.
 
Tutorial: Risk Mitigation Through Continuous Improvement
 
Abstract:
This tutorial is designed to help quality professionals add value to their organizations' risk mitigation and continuous improvement efforts through the use of the Risk Management Cycle aligned with the Plan-Do-Check-Act Cycle.  This tutorial explains how the Risk Management and Plan-Do-Check-Act cycles can be used in tandem to add sustained risk management and continual improvement for an organization.
 
Presenter Bio:
 Oscar Combs is the President and Senior Consultant of The ISO 9001 Group, a management consulting firm based in Houston, Texas.  Oscar has over 17 years of experience working for several of the largest corporations in North America in the fields of Quality, Health, Safety and Environment.  Oscar has worked throughout North America, South America, The Middle East and Africa helping companies manage risks and improve their business operations.  Oscar holds an MBA from the University of Houston and maintains various industry memberships.  He also sits on various industry boards and committees.  He is a Senior Member of ASQ.

Speaker Kristin Craft, Ed. D.

Biography

Dr. Kristin Craft serves as a campus principal at Stehlik Intermediate School in Aldine, ISD.  Over 90% of the students are Hispanic and economically-disadvantaged.   Urban schools face many challenges, but with outstanding teachers and focused leadership, success stories abound.
 
As a principal of a high-performing school, Dr. Craft utilizes processes and tools to guide teachers to ensure high levels of student achievement.  The campus leadership team searches for innovative ways to meet the educational and social needs of their students and families.
 
Dr. Craft has spoken at several state and regional conferences regarding instructional leadership and educational research.  Dr. Craft has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, and most recently was accepted into Cohort IV of the Rice University Education Entrepreneurship Program (REEP).  Her dissertation research examined the extent to which an achievement gap exists in the state of Texas in 8thgrade between White, Hispanic, and LEP students over a seven-year period.   Before serving as principal, she taught ESL language arts at 4thand 8thgrade levels.  Dr. Craft has served as principal at the elementary and intermediate school levels for nine of her 17 years in education.  Dr. Craft grew up in a small town in Iowa.  She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of Northern Iowa and studied abroad at the Universidad de Extremadura in Cáceres, Spain.  Dr. Craft completed her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in the area of Educational Leadership from Sam Houston State University.
