Event Description

Dinner Presentation:  Oil Spill Response in the United States

Abstract:  With the recent BP incident in the Gulf of Mexico the hazards of oil exploration and potential for oil spills is currently on everyone’s mind.  The news media painted a picture of the oil spill and the damage occurred that might not be completely accurate.  They also talked about several different methods that were being used by BP and their contractors I an effort to collect the oil and minimize environmental damages.  However not many of us really understand the issues involved or how the various equipment or procedures work.  What is meant by IN-SITU Burn?  What is the difference between offshore and near shore boom?  What is an oil skimmer and how many different types are there and what are they used for? What does dispersant do to the oil?  And ultimately how effective is any of these practices?  Rob Lefevers, Environmental response Advisor for Aramco will address some of these issues during the September meeting including:
·         A short background on the Enterprise to include Saudi Aramco, Aramco Services Company and Vela (who we are and what we do)
·         The basics of oil spill response to include response methodology, tools of the trade, and command/control (ICS)
·         Observations and experiences from the Deepwater Horizon response
