On behalf of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) at ASQ 1405, I wish you all a Quality New Year! Hope this year brings you lesser defects and further continuous improvements in all your endeavors. I am very excited to be your section Chair and together with my wonderful team, we promise to fill your calendar with high quality educational programs, professional development meetings and community outreach events.
As I have been meeting with family and friends, I see a common theme on everyone’s resolutions for the New Year and it is about getting healthy. One thing I have learnt over the last few years is that creating a healthy lifestyle is just as hard as creating effective Quality Cultures in companies. And I am inclined to think that if you know how to solve one you can attempt to solve the other with ease. I can’t be of much help to you on your healthy lifestyle goal, but if you are tasked with influencing your company’s culture, you will find this whitepaper a good read - http://asq.org/culture-of-quality/whitepaper.aspx. ASQ has partnered with Forbes Insights – the research arm of Forbes Media – to investigate ways organizations can strengthen quality and the bond between the formal and the informal i.e., between what is said and what is done. Assuming that healthy lifestyle change is on your resolutions list, lessons learnt from organizational culture change can help jumpstart your plans. Good Luck!
Our first Professional Dinner Meeting of 2015 will be held on January 15th at United Way on Waugh. We have both, a tutorial and a dinner presentation planned for the evening. You can follow the link for more details and to sign up – http://www.asqhouston.org/events/19/.
Lastly, I want to touch on a subject that I know is on your mind and that’s about the falling oil prices. There is no telling how low the oil prices will go and while it’s a boon to several industries and consumers, it’s a cause for concern for most of us in Houston working in the Oil & Gas industry. I wish that the ONG industry will come through this extreme decline in oil prices (hopefully a temporary one) with flying colors. Here is an interesting read ‘Priorities at odds in the oil and gas industries’ - http://asq.org/quality-progress/2013/09/risk-management/quality-vs-safety.pdf
You will find more info on Quality Cultures and several topics on the ASQ site – http://asq.org/knowledge-center/index.html.
